Welcome to my blog! You can simply call me Prem.
2010 was a decisive year. I decided that I would quit job in 2011 and try my hand at something new.
2010 was also when I did several things I always wanted to do in life. A few of them are shown in the picture below.
Want to know which the places were in the above snap? Visit this post. The journey, esp in 2010 had been exhilarating! That only kindled me to seek out ways to make it better from then on!
To my own surprise, I did quit my job in Mar 2011.
Quite a change from being a hardcore techie whose life revolved around a cubicle from Monday to Friday… one who used to read Tom Kyte’s books even in the toilet… to what it is today!
Well, it could change again… if I decide to join a tech startup or start one myself.
Rewind back to 2008.
I was being interviewed by the manager of an IT biggie for a job position.
‘What are your interests outside work?’, he asked me.
‘Hmm.., collecting coins, reading books on personal development, personal finance, equity research, etc…’, I said rather unconvincingly.
‘You sound like a serious person’, he quipped!
That took me aback!
He did offer me a job, which I refused. But his statement stayed in my mind!
I loved my work. I loved many things outside work too. But I was spending very little time on things outside work and personal finance / equity research for reasons many: lack of time, letting off ‘living’ today for the promise of a better tomorrow, etc.
I wanted to change that. Not drastically, just a bit!
That was the beginning!
Life 2.0
For the next few months, I took time to think about what I loved in life and what I wanted to do about it. (Now, I always loved my day job! No confusions about it here! Just that it was so unidimensional at that point)
The answers were
- As a kid, I loved cycling.
- Always wanted to travel, but did only a handful.
- Loved photography, but didn’t allow myself the time to work on it.
- Books.
- Managing money. Yes, I always loved monopoly as a kid. Loved seeing growth of my city in Caesar’s palace and the growth of my empire in Age of Empires!
- I always dreamed of being an entrepreneur
Then, I slowly started working on my life and got into these:
- cycling
- photography
- travelling and trekking
- wild life
- reading books
- Personal finance, almost an odd man out. I love money. The more of it, the more crazy I can afford to be!
- other stuff like collecting coins, watching movies from around the world, etc
And the other option, ‘Entrepreneurship’ was too risky for me and put that in ‘wait and see’ mode.
‘Living’
Post April 2009, life changed!
That translates to – cycling a lot, traveling a ton (including to the rainforests of Borneo, national parks in USA, places all over Karnataka, etc), immersing myself in photography, etc. There are others too – like bird watching, collecting coins of 130+ countries, watching amazing movies from all over the world, etc!
And yes, having a financial hobby has helped too. The stock market performed very well post Apr 2009 and that was useful.
It also kindled some craziness in me that made me do things like
- complete TFN 2010, an 880Km cycling ride in 8 days
- climb the tallest mountain, Mt Kinabalu in Borneo
- explore few of the largest caves in the world
- almost get lost cycling in the dark in an isolated and unknown place in the US, with no map and no cell connectivity
- camp in amazingly beautiful places like Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, Monument Valley, etc
Life post Apr 2009 has been fantastic! And to add to it, my daughter entered my life in Nov 2009! Things have been amazingly wonderful since then!
Now, with many things falling into place… I grew greedier. The other option left out was ‘Entrepreneurship’.
The time had come to give it a shot. ‘Don’t worry about failure.. just give it an earnest attempt’, I told myself. I quit from my job in Mar 2011.
As of now, am on a quest to figure out what I want to do. Perhaps, I might go back to a job after a year or so. Or I might stick it out longer. I don’t know. But… life has been fun and I know I have been lucky. I only want to stretch it more!!!
More about me:
Am married to an intelligent girl and have a very naughty daughter! My family is my biggest asset and a fantastic support system!
I work (only freelancing these days) in an industry that deals with ‘data’, huge volumes of it! My work is to help businesses make sense out of ‘data’ and hence to assist in driving key business ‘decisions’. (Data –> Information –> Decision). In short, I work on Business Intelligence, data warehousing and databases. Therein lies one of my passions!
My resume is available here.

I grew up in Nilgiris (Ooty) and I guess that is where my love of nature, cycling, etc come from. I come from a middle class farmer family that has deviated from agriculture in the last 2 generations and I always dream of reversing the trend. I also dream of living a dual life – one in the big bad world in the cities, other in a quaint countryside.
Why have a blog?
I don’t know why I blog.. I am no great blogger. And I do not have any agenda for this blog, except maybe improving my on-line presence. I am not behind the top 100 list or 10,000 visitors per month. I just want to write… Also I would love to connect with people. I would love to network with people having similar interests.
If you want to know me better (I would like to believe you do.. atleast satisfies my ego!), there are many ways to connect, apart from this blog. Any time, feel free to contact me on:
